Welcome to the World of Homeschooling!

Hey everyone! Welcome to the world of homeschooling! Some of you are most likely comfortable with this new world of education; but many of you may be questioning how you will begin educating your kids at home. You may feel overwhelmed, and maybe worried. Well, here's some good news; you don't have to.

You as parents are facilitators of your child's education. What does that mean? It means that there are hundreds of resources out there, including, hopefully, your chid's classroom teacher, that can provide educational activities and materials. Your job is to support that learning, just like you have always done.

It can be very overwhelming jumping in, without any plan to do so, and feel the full brunt of the responsibility of being an educator. But I am here to help. I have elementary teaching degrees in three states and over 30 years of teaching experience, including 8 years of homeschool. This does not mean that I have all of the answers; and that's why a community of people works best when we try to help others.

So, if you are feeling that stress about being your child's primary educator, and want a place to go for advice, ideas, and community, please visit often. Let's get together and enjoy this time with our kids. It can be an amazing memory for them, and us, filled with wonderful learning opportunities.

Colorado Mining Towns

Mining for Silver and Gold

Between the towns of Victor and Cripple Creek in Colorado lies the Newmont Mining Company, a major employee for the area, besides the casinos.

Can you tell what this used to be?

Harry Potter Time!

My oldest son was a huge Harry Potter fan about 5 years ago.  His interest was recently re-sparked when my 10-year old twins started reading the books.  We attended a Harry Potter night (4 hours!) at Barnes & Noble for the release of the newest book; Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.  Since then, everything has been Harry Potter this and Harry Potter that.  Lego Hogwarts; cloak wearing; spell writing; wand making; and book reading.  With school about to start up again, I thought I'd incorporate their interst-du-jour into our learning.  I'll add more as the year progresses.

Butter Beer
Lots of recipes online.  Don't need to get too fancy for fun.

We did this and it was SO fun!  Happened to have a pack of chopsticks already (from the one time I tried to use them many moons ago). Kids loved this project.

Monster Book of Monsters.
This was fun!

Arithmancy is a magical discipline that studies
the magical properties of numbers, including predicting the future with numbers and numerology
Those who practised Arithmancy were called Arithmancers.

We had fun making some of these!

Place Value

To understand place value is to understand the structure and sequence of our base ten number system. As students count, interpret the values of written and spoken numbers, decide which number is larger or smaller, and explore relationships among numbers, they are developing a picture of our number system.

TANGRAMS!

Tangrams are an ancient puzzle that has stayed relevant through time.
And they are really fun to learn with, too.

What are Tangrams?

Tangrams are a Chinese puzzle consisting of a square cut into five triangles, a square, and a rhomboid, which can be combined so as to form a great variety of other figures.
